has been selected to receive the highly prestigious Trouble Worldwide Award by globalFEST at APAPNYC, the largest gathering of world music professionals in North America.

The Trouble Worldwide Award goes to a non-performing professional living or working substantially in the US who has made an indisputable impact on the global music field through risk taking, innovation and tireless commitment. As this year’s recipient, Lisa has booked over 2000 live music performances in her 21 years as Programming Director for Festival International de Louisiane. Bill Bragin, co-founder of globalFEST, stated “Lisa Stafford is exactly the kind of person we created the Trouble Worldwide award to honor. She has been a pioneering curator who has opened her region to inventive artists from across the globe as well as being a fierce champion of Louisiana’s rich regional musical traditions. She’s also been an incredible humanitarian, galvanizing the community to respond to people in need.”

Bragin went on to explain a recent situation where Lisa’s hard work and compassion was exemplified. “The was a Haitian band recently that needed a temporary port of calm due to the current situation back home, I reached out to her, knowing she would be sympathetic to their needs.” he explained. “Her response, and that of the Lafayette community, was a perfect example of why she deserves this recognition.”This prestigious honor reflects the impact Stafford has had not only in Lafayette’s music community, but on an international level as well. Over the span of her career with the organization, Lisa has created a broad network with thousands of international and local musicians. She has also nurtured growth opportunities for Francophone musicians to develop their exposure in the United States.

“Lisa Stafford is a beating heart on legs.  Her passion for music and her love of people have been essential to the success of Festival International de Louisiane.” said local and international musician, Zachary Richard.” Her impact in the community at large is profound and profoundly meaningful.”

Stafford will receive the Trouble Worldwide Award by globalFEST at APAPNYC in person at the ceremony in New York City this weekend.

Festival International Announces Official 2020 Visual Artist
Lafayette, LA – Festival International de Louisiane is proud to announce Tommy Hughes as the Official 2020 Visual Artist. Hughes was born in Massachusetts but has lived in Lafayette since he was two years old. He is currently in the process of creating the artwork for the 34th annual Festival International de Louisiane, presented by LUS Fiber.

Tommy’s passion for the arts started at a young age where he would fill notebooks with sketches and mazes to try and understand form and balance.  His draw to art continued through college where he graduated from architecture at ULL and learned different media techniques for presentations.

After 20 years of technical drawing and managing architectural projects, his passion for art resurfaced in order to find balance from computer aided drafting.  Tommy’s passion for portraits and inventive nature with watercolors, graffiti paint, inks and paint markers has opened his eyes to whimsical characters design where one can see through faces to a world of textures.

Hughes’ goal is to bridge the gap between art and architecture and create studio developments in which his resin furniture, characters art and sleek design can open minds to a new way of living. His unique style and processes have landed him the opportunity to be the Visual Artist this year for a festival that he loves and looks forward to each year.

“The vibrant colors and the style of Hughes’ work stopped us all in our tracks. We wanted something bold and fresh to encompass Festival 2020.” said Carly Viator, Marketing Coordinator for Festival International. “Following along with his artistic process and reasoning behind each detail has us very excited to see the final piece of artwork.”

To Tommy Hughes, Festival International is about celebrating the diversity in cultures that come to Lafayette, as well as the cultures integrated here.  For the last ten years, his Saturday of Festival has meant hosting a BBQ crab and crawfish boil party to celebrate with friends and family. This year, he will be celebrating on a new level.

“I’m beyond honored to be a part of the Festival International Team to create this year’s 34th annual artwork for the poster and Festival merchandise”. Tommy stated. For a sneak peek into Tommy’s style, please visit his portfolio website at www.resintop.com

Blue Christmas will take place at Rock ‘n’ Bowl in Downtown Lafayette on Monday, Dec. 9, from 4:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Admission is $10 for entry or $20 for entry and food.

This event is family-friendly, and Santa will be at the front door for pictures as the event starts. The live music starts at 5:30 with students from School of Rock Lafayette. Festival International has partnered with Blue Monday Mission to support the individuals who helped create Lafayette’s vibrant music and arts culture. “Blue Monday Mission is in its third year of providing services for musicians and artists throughout Acadiana. It is truly a blessing to have earned the support of Festival International and collaborating with them to fulfill our mission,” says Blue Monday Mission Executive Director John Williams. “Our partnership marks the importance of taking responsibility for providing for the people who have dedicated their lives to the development of our creative economy and culture: our musicians, artists, chefs and service industry workers.

”For Festival International, partnering with Blue Monday Mission is an opportunity to bring international and local artists together to benefit a worthwhile cause.”The holidays are a time for giving and sharing, and our Festival team is excited to be coming together with Blue Monday Mission to do just that,” says Festival International Executive Director Scott Feehan. “Their mission to serve our creative community is unique and vital, so we certainly want to help spread the word and to assist them in any way we can. It will be a special evening.”

In the spirit of the holidays, these two organizations are asking for donations for their toy drive, which will benefit children around Acadiana. Bring unwrapped gifts for children and teens to Blue Christmas on Dec. 9, or drop off donations at Hub City Ford or the Festival International office during business hours between Nov. 13 and Dec. 14.

Festival International de Louisiane Announces 2019 Lineup

Lafayette, LA – Festival International de Louisiane has released its 2019 performance lineup. This year’s artists will include some of the world’s most talented and influential performers, such as Dobet Gnahoré (Ivory Coast), Moonlight Benjamin (Haiti), and the United States’ very own master of funk pedal steel: Robert Randolph & the Family Band.

The 33rd-year’s lineup features international performers representing 24 different countries and regions, combining new artists with some returning favorites.

“We searched high and low to find a perfect balance of traditional and contemporary sounds, so there is something for everyone this year,” said Festival International Programming Director Lisa Stafford.

“Sudan will be represented at Festival for the first time ever with Alsarah and the Nubatones,” Stafford added.  “Mozambique-influenced artist Gato Preto will also be making waves. I can’t wait to see these groups in person!”

Also new to the festival this year are El Septeto Santiaguero, of Cuba, and Doctor Nativo, of Guatemala, both of which are known to get crowds moving with their high-energy Latin rhythms. Returning this year, by popular demand, will be New Brunswick’s Les Hôtesses d’Hilaire (AKA the “super-talented and hilarious Québécois man in a dress”).

As always, Festival International focuses on bringing in French-speaking musicians to share their language and diverse cultures with Lafayette. This year, Festivalgoers can expect an assortment of artists from francophone countries, ranging from Haiti (Moonlight Benjamin and Boukman Eksperyans), to Niger (Mdou Moctar) to France (Bagad Plougastell and Akalé Wubé).

The bill for Louisiana’s homegrown artists is also a stand-out this year –  with Grammy Award winners, blues legends and rising stars galore. The Blue Monday Allstars’ Living Legends Tribute will bring the talent of Carol Fran, Henry Gray and Lil’ Buck Sinegal onto one stage to share the light they have cast onto music lovers for decades. Joining this once-in-a-lifetime set will be special guests: Smokehouse Porter & Miss Mamie; Marc Broussard; Lee Allen Zeno; Steve Adams; Tony Goulas; Kent August; Ron Eades and much more.

“It is a rare chance to see all of these legends in one place,” said Festival International Executive Director Scott Feehan. “Lafayette’s music scene is very powerful, and it is exciting to pull all of these musicians together to celebrate their success with the community.”

Other local favorites to catch during Festival International are Keith Frank & the Soileau Zydeco Band, Lane Mack & The Balladeers and Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys. New Orleans will also be sharing its talent with Lafayette as we welcome Grammy Award nominees Cha Wa, as well as 2017 NPR Tiny Desk Concert Winner Tank & the Bangas.  Festival International takes pride in showcasing Louisiana talents along with top bands from around the world.

More information will be coming soon on the full schedule, special exhibits and events. The Full Lineup and video can be found online at www.festivalinternational.org/2019-artists.

Girme Bèyènè is a true legend when it comes to Ethiopian music. After an exile to the United States and a radio silence that lasted 25 years, he jubilantly accepted the invitation from the French group Akalé Wubé to return to the spotlight and perform again.

Moonlight Benjamin (Haiti)

Moonlight Benjamin is coming to us from Haiti with a new and explosive style known as voodoo trance. With a powerful and original fusion between the Caribbean voodoo melodies and rhythms, this 70’s US blues rock creates a shock between Moonlight’s powerful and rebellious voice and the tension of saturated guitars.

“Festival International is thrilled to have Moonlight Benjamin in Lafayette this year because her presence and sounds will just captivate our audiences.” says Marketing Coordinator, Carly Viator. “Festival focuses heavily on having Francophone (French speaking) artists each year, and the music of Haiti is always embraced by our community. We are happy Moonlight will be sharing her moody voodoo blues with us and representing the Haitian culture in 2019.”

Festival lovers are encouraged to explore the music of Moonlight Benjamin, and the other artists we are leaking over the next month, because this will allow them to connect with the bands in advance. Be sure to check out our previous Artist Leak, Doctor Nativo, who is coming to us from Guatemala. Learn the songs, sing along, and get excited for Festival International de Louisiane 2019!

Festival International Announces Official 2019 Visual Artist

Lafayette, LA – Festival International de Louisiane is proud to announce Kody Chamberlain as the Official 2019 Visual Artist. Chamberlain was born and raised in Thibodaux, Louisiana and relocated to Lafayette in 1993. He is currently in the process of creating the artwork for the 33rd annual Festival International de Louisiane, presented by LUS Fiber.

Since moving to Lafayette, Chamberlain has only missed one Festival International and has been involved with the festival on various levels over the years, including as a performer.  “In fact, I first learned of Festival from a poster hanging in the percussion room of Angelle Hall at UL when I drove in for an audition.”  Kody is an accomplished local artist that is known for creating original and groundbreaking work in comics and graphic novels for companies like Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, IDW, and Image Comics. He has also earned an impressive list of credits as a professional story artist.

“We are fortunate to have Chamberlain here in our creative community,” says Virgil “Buz” Reid, Festival International’s Board President. “His work is edgy and unique, and we’re excited to see his vision unfold.” The final design will serve as the inspiration for the official Festival poster and cloisonné pin.

“To say it’s an honor and a thrill to have this opportunity is an understatement,” says Chamberlain. “I’m very much looking forward to bringing a little of what I love back into the Festival.”

Stay tuned as we await the final piece from Kody Chamberlain. “We have no idea what to expect, but know that someone with immense creativity like Kody will definitely bring something great to the table,” says Scott Feehan, Executive Director of Festival International.
