Here is a letter that was sent out to our supporters in December. I send regular updates about what is going on behind the scenes to all of our supporters.

We have a lot of things going on and most of them are great! We also have a few opportunities that I wanted to share. The bullet points below are brief, just want to keep you in the loop.

Our lineup is complete, with musicians from 21 different countries (will be released in February – stay tuned). We have committed more money this year than ever before to musicians and street animation (over $280,000, compared to $250,000 last year).

We have great opportunities for new sponsorship exposure this year. We have a $10,000 package that will receive over $75,000 worth of radio advertising alone. We have another opportunity to receive a TON of media exposure, branding and consumer engagement with a new technology that we will be rolling out with LUS Fiber next year. Interested? Our Marketing Director, April Courville, recently resigned to pursue a new, exciting opportunity. We wish her the best and are grateful for all of the work she has done over the past several years – she left some big shoes to fill…

Our new Amis campaign started last month and so far, has been going well. You may have seen the signs around town and the commercials on the tube. A huge thank you to Neekee, Paul and Taylor for allowing us to share their stories. If you haven’t renewed for next year yet, click here and do it now – Let’s Own the Moment!

Liam Doyle has joined our team as our new ADA coordinator. He will be focused on accessibility throughout Festival Grounds. He has been doing good work as the Disability Affairs Coordinator for Lafayette Consolidated Government and we are looking forward to working with him.

We have a new mobile app provider and have recently begun the development of our brand new app. We will have dedicated features focused on sending Festival patrons to the businesses that support us…

Overall fundraising so far is going well, but we still have a long ways to go. If you are curious, you can see our progress on all programs by clicking here. Programming Director, Lisa Stafford, Named Chevalier of the French Order of Arts & Letters

Lafayette, LA/ New Orleans, LA – On Thursday, November 2, Lisa Stafford, Programming Director of Festival International was named “Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres” (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters), a prestigious distinction awarded under the jurisdiction of the French Minister of Culture and Communication.

At a reception in her honor prior to La Fête du Festival, presented by Home Bank, the Festival International fundraiser, the Consul General of France in Louisiana, Mr. Vincent Sciama presented the award in the name of the President of the French Republic.

Stafford is now in her 20th year as Programming Director of Festival International de Louisiane.  Over the span of her career with the organization, Lisa has created a broad network with thousands of international and local musicians. She has also nurtured growth opportunities for Francophone musicians to develop their exposure in the United States. “I had kind of given up on meeting someone like her in the music business and there she was:  A beautiful human being with unforgiving ears and total dedication to her craft,” says Pascale Danae, member of Paris, France band, Delgres. “Building bridges between artists and cultures in the most enjoyable way, our Godmother in the U.S., thank you, Lisa Stafford.”

Stafford has assisted many artists similar to Danae along her professional journey.  “To be honored for something that I am passionate about and love doing is both rewarding and humbling at the same time,” says Stafford. “I am so fortunate to have a job that has taken me to so many places, met so many people, and experience so many cultures.”

Established in 1957, the award recognizes individuals who have contributed significantly to furthering the arts in France and around the world. Other recipients include Zachary Richard, Eric Clapton, and Bono.

About The Consulate General of France

The Consulate General of France in Louisiana was founded in 1803, following the sale of the Louisiana territory to the United States by Napoleon Bonaparte. It is the oldest French consulate in the United States. The Consulate’s principal missions include consular assistance to the French community in Louisiana; support of French language educational programs; development of French cultural initiatives; facilitation of economic exchange between France and Louisiana. The Consul General of France in Louisiana, Mr. Vincent Sciama, is the Consulate’s chief of mission.

A letter from the Executive Director

It may seem like 2017 Festival International is a distant memory, but we have been hard at work trying to close out one year and prepare for the next. As our fiscal year comes to an end, we’ve had some time to reflect and wanted to share some insight with you.  

2016 was a challenging year for Acadiana. From a struggling economy to the August floods – all of us were affected in many ways and Festival International was not immune. Many of our major sponsors were experiencing trying times and had to adjust their support. The festival family stepped up and contributed in every way that they could to help us make it through. We want you to know how much your support means to our beloved Festival. This is a quick year-end report meant to fill you in on some of the behind the scenes happenings from last year, as well as some of the things coming up on the horizon.

Facing Challenges

Every year, we are tasked with raising between 1.1 and 1.5 million dollars to put on Festival. A third of this comes from Corporate sponsors, a third from small business and individual contributions and the other third from on-site sales (merchandise, pins, beverages, etc.), roughly. We usually start the year with a decent amount of Corporate funds secured, then we piece everything together on top of that.

However last year, none of our stages were secured. Starting at zero was a scary and daunting task. This is the biggest piece of our Corporate bucket, which is over $300,000. After reaching out to over 100 local companies, we were striking out. We reached out to a national audience for sponsors and still came up dry.

Parallel to these financial challenges, the staff at the Office of Visa Services was cut from over 100 employees to under 20. For our international musicians, this meant that lead times, costs and/or the chances of visas being rejected were all going to increase.

Cutting Heritage

With these challenges piling up, we had some tough decisions to make. Cutting the Heritage Stage was not a decision that we made lightly, among other cuts. We cut our budget in all capacities and were prepared to cut more.

The community response to this news was humbling. It felt like the entire community stepped up and said, “There is no way that we are going to let Festival fail.” Large companies stepped up and secured our stages. Local businesses and individuals pitched in. It was an organic effort that felt right. It was the community that owned it and took pride in supporting it. This gave us renewed energy and enthusiasm to keep moving forward.

Another promising development was with new community involvement. While we are primarily a francophone celebration, we recognize that our community is more diverse than it was 30 years ago. This year we invited members from the Indian, Cuban, and Chinese communities to become involved. We connected with them through various performers representing their native countries. Those respective communities supported those efforts and helped to make it all possible. We are eternally grateful and are looking forward to continuing to nurture those relationships.

The Community Foundation of Acadiana

In January, things finally felt like they were turning around. Our Corporate bucket was filling up and our other fundraising buckets were starting to look better as well. We were able to ensure another year of a world-class event.

In addition to our internal efforts, we had an effort organized by a couple of long-time key supporters. There was a dedicated fund set up at The Community Foundation of Acadiana. Mr. Herbie and Mrs. Renee Schilling, as well as Mr. Don and Mrs. Darrelyn Burts seeded $95,000 into this account, which is meant to be a true “Rainy Day” fund. If / when we ever hit hard times, we will be able to request help from this fund to get through. Of course, our intention is to never get to this point. Another goal of the group is to raise enough money to pay off our new building. A new, permanent home in downtown means a hard asset that will provide some long-term financial stability.

The week of Festival

Despite strong winds and threatening weather, all in all, we feel great about how we were able to overcome many challenges and put on a great festival. Beverage sales were down, but merchandise sales were up. Attendance was slightly low on certain days, but spirits were high. Bottom line, we were able to make enough money to pay for the event and put some aside to fight future battles.

Looking to the future

We are in decent shape financially and great shape spiritually. We are encouraged by our Mayor’s CREATE initiative and look forward to working hand in hand to put Lafayette on the world map as a cultural destination. We have already participated in several meetings to help move this initiative along We are also working with local law enforcement to help ensure that our event and downtown Lafayette are safe, attractive, and family-friendly places for people from all walks to be.

We are going to be investing more money than ever into programming. We want to attract even more worldwide talent – on our stages, in our streets, and in our vendor booths. We will be spending more on production to improve that quality of shows. We will continue to cultivate our relationships with other foreign communities in Acadiana. Our goal is to have an even more diverse showing of music, art, and food. We are not looking to book bigger, more well-known acts – we want to book more eclectic, unique acts from around the world. We want you to experience things you would not experience anywhere else.

We are investing in infrastructures – such as electrics, buildings, and tents. We are working towards being financially stable so that we can withstand the storm when the economy takes a hit. We want to be a bright spot for Acadiana, no matter what happens.

We take pride in our work. We want you to know that you are an integral part of what brings the world to Lafayette. Your contribution means a lot to us. We are honored to have you as a part of our family and hope that you will continue to be. This year, we learned that we can not take this event for granted. If we want Festival to live on, it is up to all of us to do our part. As a supporter, we will keep you in the loop moving forward on all things Festival. We hope that you feel good about what we are working on and will continue to support these efforts.

4th Annual Fundraiser, La Fête du Festival, presented by Home Bank, Announced for November 2nd

Lafayette, LA – Festival International de Louisiane is proud to announce the fourth annual La Fête du Festival, presented by Home Bank, to be held on Thursday, November 2, 2017, from 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm at Warehouse 535, located at 535 Garfield St, in the Freetown neighborhood.

The fundraising party will feature live music by Spanish Hip-Hop vocalist and 2016 Festival performer, Boogat.  The night will also have Cuban food from Café Habana City, and specialty Latin inspired cocktails and drink specials. The décor will feature textures and colors from an array of Latin American countries.  “Lafayette has several cultures that make up the Latin American community, from Puerto Rican and Mexican to Venezuelan and Honduran,” says Tom Brown, President of the Board of Festival International. “We chose a Latin theme for our annual fundraiser, La Fête du Festival, to honor and celebrate the large community that resides here.”

Of Paraguayan and Mexican descent, Boogát was born in Québec City to immigrant parents, then moved to Montreal in 2001. Performing initially in French, Boogát switched to Spanish after playing with Latin Music group Roberto Lopez Project and Electro producer Poirier.

His music mixes hip-hop with Latin music like Cumbia and Reggaeton. He sings in French and Spanish and has performed at Festival International in 2016.

He’s collaborated with artists such as Uproot Andy, El Hijo De La Cumbia, Radio Radio, Lido Pimienta, Sotomayor, Super San, Niña Dioz, Mati Zundel and Festival favorite, Pierre Kwenders. He released his first full-length Spanish album ”El Dorado Sunset” in 2013. The album won two ”Félix Awards” for ”Best World Music Album” and ”Producer of the Year” at ”ADISQ 2013”.

“Annually, La Fête is our official visual arts, pin, and poster unveiling as well as the official kickoff to our fundraising year,” says Brown. The 2018 Pin and Poster designs are inspired by the official artwork, Stiltwalker Strut, by New Orleans artist Mollie Wallace. The official artwork will be on display and sold by silent auction during the event.  “Festival supporters are beginning to look forward to this event every year,” notes April Courville, Marketing Director. “The event sold out last year. It seems like each year is more fun than the last and is increasingly gaining the reputation of being one of the best Festival events to attend.”

Festival International Announces Official 2018 Visual Artist

Lafayette, LA – Festival International de Louisiane is proud to announce Mollie Wallace as the Official 2018 Visual Artist. Wallace has lived in New Orleans for over 13 years and has created a vibrant representation of the 32nd annual Festival International de Louisiane, presented by LUS Fiber.

Mollie Wallace was born and raised in Des Moines, Iowa. According to her mother, she started drawing the minute she could pick up a pencil. She graduated with a Bachelors in Fine Arts from the Pratt Art Institute Brooklyn, NYC, with a major in Illustration-Communication Design in 2004. She moved to New Orleans shortly after and began working at a local bar, Erin Rose in the French Quarter. She soon began designing and painting bar signs and multiple murals for the bar.

“Wallace is a hidden gem,” says Tom Brown, Festival International’s Board President. “Her work is edgy and fresh, yet professional.” Wallace’s design will serve as the inspiration for the official Festival poster and cloisonné pin.

“So many of my close friends in New Orleans are tied to this festival,” says Wallace. “It is such an honor to be able to represent Festival International’s spirit through my art work.”

Stiltwalker Strut will be on display at the fourth annual, La Fête du Festival, presented by Home Bank, a ticketed fundraising event on November 2nd at Warehouse 535 and will be up for silent auction. Her paintings are characterized by bright, striking colors and intricate details.

Wallace met her husband Bobby In 2006, and they were married in 2012. They welcomed a son, Beau, in 2013. Mollie continues to create paintings, posters, signs, portraits, and murals for her clients and still bartends once a week. She and her family live in the 7th Ward in New Orleans.

Wallace has painted commissioned work for various businesses throughout the country including Erin Rose, Killer Poboys, Elizabeth’s Restaurant and Pelican Poboys Foodtruck. Her work can be seen on https://www.facebook.com/MollieWallaceArt/.

Festival International and Downtown Lafayette Unlimited Collaborate for Fall & Spring DTA! Season

Downtown Lafayette Unlimited and Festival International de Louisiane are excited to announce a collaboration for the fall 2017 Downtown Alive! Season. The two organizations have agreed to pool together resources to execute a more polished Downton Alive! Experience for patrons.

“With DTA!’s Spring and Fall season-long presence, and Festival’s demonstrated talent to deliver a large, world-class music event in the Spring, putting these two efforts together seems like a natural fit,” says DDA and Downtown Lafayette Unlimited CEO Geoff Dyer. “Both of these events were born out of a shared desire to promote our musical culture within the backdrop of Lafayette’s Downtown. We are excited that Festival International is open to lending us the talent and skills of their team to help deliver an even better DTA!.”

Festival International understands the importance of community support and was open to the opportunity. “With limited resources all around, we are happy to collaborate and pool our talents together. It can only strengthen each organization,” says Scott Feehan, Executive Director for Festival International. “We look forward to exploring future growth with DLU.”

The Festival International staff will assist with logistics, organization, promotion, and execution of the ten DTA! Events scheduled for the fall and will be considered an in-kind sponsor for the DTA! Fall Season.

Festival Announces First Annual Bastille Day Picnic

Festival International presents A Bastille Day Picnic, Featuring Ratatouille

Lafayette, LA: Festival International is hosting the first annual Bastille Day Picnic on Saturday, July 15, 2017. The event will be held at Warehouse 535, located at 535 Garfield in Lafayette. As part of the Francophone heritage in Acadiana, Festival organizers are hoping an annual Bastille Day celebration will create stronger ties within the community. “Bastille Day is celebrated all over the country,” says Marketing Director, April Courville. “Yet, despite our rich French culture, it is not celebrated here.” Festival International organizers are hoping to change that.

The picnic will be a family friendly event and include an outdoor screening of animated film, Ratatouille. Remy (Patton Oswalt), a resident of Paris, appreciates good food and has quite a sophisticated palate. He would love to become a chef so he can create and enjoy culinary masterpieces to his heart’s delight. The only problem is, Remy is a rat. When he winds up in the sewer beneath one of Paris’ finest restaurants, the rodent gourmet finds himself ideally placed to realize his dream.

The Bastille Day Picnic will also include a tasting of select French wines perfect for summer, from a Rose, a white (Blanc), a Pinot Noir to Côte du Rhone Rouge. The first 25 guests will receive an additional tasting of Sparkling Wine as part of their flight. Guests can sample small plates of artisan cheeses, courtesy of Champagne’s Supermarket.

Additional food and drinks will be available for purchase. Organizers hope to grow the event over the coming years and expand to include more activities such as petanque tournaments, French language mini-lessons, and live music.
A $5 donation is required for the tastings, however, children 12 and under get in free to attend the movie.

For Immediate Release: (LIME) Connects Local Musicians to the Rest of the World

Lafayette, LA – Festival International’s Louisiana International Music Exchange (LIME) celebrates 10 years of bringing South Louisiana music to the world. Now in its tenth year, the one-day LIME event features Louisiana music showcases, music industry panels, and networking. The networking event will be held Friday, April 28th from 1 – 4 pm at Warehouse 535. Music showcases will feature fantasy pop group Rareluth and alternative Creole band Sean Ardoin + Zydekool. Local musicians looking to expand their audience and business knowledge will have a chance to network with visiting industry professionals from all over the United States.

LIME began as a response to an effort by the Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism’s Office of Cultural Development to look for new and innovative ways to boost Louisiana’s cultural economy. LIME was the first to answer this call, using Festival International as the setting for interaction between the musicians of Acadiana and a bevy of presenters, agents, and labels. The Louisiana International Music Exchange forms a network between artists and presenters but also increases the economic wealth of Louisiana by creating jobs and futures.

There are also Festival After Hours showcases at live music venues throughout downtown. These events are offered to encourage professional networking opportunities for Louisiana musicians and help music industry professionals broaden their musical experience during Festival International de Louisiane, presented by LUS Fiber. Festival After Hours venues includes Warehouse 535, Phillyanna and Artmosphere.

Lafayette, LA – Festival International de Louisiane has released the 2017 schedule. This year’s Festival International, presented by LUS Fiber includes new events such as theater productions, art exhibits, visual installations and special after-hours events.

Festival International is proud to be a festival of music, arts, and theater. The 2017 schedule allows festival goers to plan their experience and take in the many performances throughout the season.

Festival International de Louisiane is a non-profit organization that produces the largest International music and arts festival in the United States with a special emphasis on the connection between Acadiana and the Francophone world and an estimated economic impact of 49 million annually.  With over 300,000 festival goers every year, the annual festival features musical performances by artists from over 20 countries along with workshops, exhibits, visual art, theater and other forms of performance arts. Festival International Announces Volunteer Opportunities

Lafayette, LA – Festival International de Louisiane is actively looking for smiling faces to volunteer in a variety of positions during this year’s Festival International, presented by LUS Fiber, April 26-30, 2017. Festival International is known for the supporters and volunteers that help out year after year. The organization relies on upwards of 2,000 volunteers to assure the event is a success.

Registration is now open through the online Volunteer Center at www.festivalinternational.org/volunteer (http://festivalinternational.volunteerlocal.com/volunteer/) . Users can view all of the volunteer opportunities and register for the area and shift times of choice. The online system will allow individuals and groups to register, create their own schedule and track hours worked. Volunteers are vital to the longevity and success of Festival year after year.

-Marché Hospitality

-Musicians’ Village Cafe

-Pin Sellers

-Recycling

-Chevron Scène des Jeunes (Youth Area)
